Bombay high court declines pre­-arrest bail to man booked for ‘unnatural’ sex

The Bombay high court recently refused anticipatory bail to a pilot who was booked under Indian Penal Code Section 377 for unnatural intercourse on a complaint by a woman he was to marry. “It is very well true that if one of the parties to intercourse subsequently dislikes it, he or she has every right to take recourse to the law which is available,” said Justice S M Modak on April 13.

Cut-off for JEE(Advanced) at four-year high in general category, five-year high for reserved

The qualifying percentile in JEE (Main) to be eligible for JEE (Advanced), the gateway to 23 Indian Institutes of technology (IITs), registered a five-year high for the reserved category and a four-year-high for the general category candidates this year. The minimum cutoff for the general category this year is 90.7 percentile, up from 88.4 in 2022. The cutoff for the OBC category rose to 73.6 percentile this year from 67 in 2022 and 68 in 2021.

Ghazipur court on Saturday sentenced jailed ganglord Mukhtar Ansari to 10 years’ imprisonment and his BSP MP brother, Afzal Ansari, to four years following their conviction in separate cases registered under the UP Gangsters Act in 2007. Additional sessions judge-I (MP-MLA court) Durgesh also fined Mukhtar Rs 5 lakh and Afzal Rs 1 lakh. The sentencing of Afzal paves the way for his automatic disqualification from the Lok Sabha. He represents Ghazipur in Parliament.

Supreme Court eases no-­construction rule near national parks

The Supreme Court on Wednesday permitted forest dwellers to legitimately continue with their traditional activities, farming, construction of houses and schools within the eco-sensitive zones (ESZs) of national parks and wildlife sanctuaries. The top court modified its year-old order banning all activities within a 1-km periphery of national parks and sanctuaries on an application from the Union government.

10 DRG jawans, driver killed in Maoist IED blast in Dantewada; police say 50kg of explosives used

At least 10 personnel of the District Reserve Guards (DRG) and their civilian driver were killed when Maoists detonated a powerful IED on a kuchha road and fired on the wounded jawans near Aranpur in Dantewada district of Bastar, about 400km south of Raipur, on Wednesday. Around 200 jawans were returning in a convoy when the blast was triggered around 1.30pm. Police believe 50kg of explosives was used.

‘Operation Kaveri’ kicks off to evacuate 3,000 Indians from Sudan

The government on Monday launched ‘Operation Kaveri’ to evacuate close to 3,000 Indian citizens stranded in Sudan, the African country that remained on edge because of fierce fighting between the army and a paramilitary force.
