President's call on mercy pleas final, no appeal, proposes BNSS Bill

In what will do away with judicial review of decisions taken by the President on mercy petitions of death row convicts, the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita Bill (BNSS) 2023 seeks to bar appeals against any order made by the President in exercise of the power to grant pardon or commute a death sentence under Article 72 of the Constitution. Further, the courts cannot go into the grounds of the President’s decision.

Chandrayaan-3: Once again, co-traveller Pragyan captures Vikram lander on lunar surface

The Indian Space Reasearch Organisation (Isro) on Wednesday released another set of images of Chandrayaan-3's Vikram lander. The images were clicked by 'co-traveller Pragyan' on the lunar surface around 11am this morning. Earlier today, Isro had released the first photos of Vikram lander since its historic landing on August 23. They were taken by the Navigation Camera onboard the rover, Isro said.

Chandrayaan's Pragyan rover avoids 4m crater, safe path picked

Isro on Monday said that on August 27, Chandrayaan-3 rover Pragyan came across a 4-metre diameter crater positioned 3 metres ahead of its location, causing it to change its path. “The Rover was commanded to retrace the path. It’s now safely heading on a new path,” Isro said. This is the second crater Pragyan has encountered — it has successfully negotiated a small crater with a depth of approximately 100-mm earlier, as first reported by TOI in its August 28 edition.

Rice to cotton, rising costs have made farming less profitable

Around 2010-11, India’s sugarcane farmers earned roughly Rs 2.8 for every rupee they invested in their crop. By 2020-21, they were making only about Rs 2.1 on every rupee. For cotton farmers, profitability has declined even more. They earned about 1.8 on every rupee spent around 2009-10. By 2020-21, it was down to Rs 1.3.

JEE aspirant hangs self in Kota, 20th suicide this year

An 18-year-old Bihar student was found dead in his Kota PG hostel room, the latest suicide and fourth since the last fortnight. Identified as Valmiki Prasad, the engineering entrant had been preparing for his IIT-JEE exam since last academic session.
