Study: More cold wave days in India in recent decade

India may have seen a number of record-breaking warm years in the recent decades, but there has been no let-up in the extreme cold waves in the country despite global warming, an IITM study has indicated. The analysis, led by IITM scientists Raju Mandal and Susmitha Joseph, took into account the number of cold wave events in the last seven decades, 1951–2022, and found that more cold wave days are occurring in the recent decades than in the previous ones.

Rs 4 lakh crore likely for rail, highways next fiscal

The highways and railway sectors are likely to get a combined budgetary allocation of over Rs 4 lakh crore, the highest ever. Both the ministries may see 20-30% increase in their allocation considering their track record in spending so far. During the current financial year, the Centre has allocated almost Rs 2 lakh crore for the road transport and highways ministry and going by the current trend of expenditure; the total spending is likely to touch Rs 2.1 lakh crore by March end.

India modernising nuke arsenal with eye on China, says American report

India continues to modernise its nuclear arsenal and operationalise its nascent triad, and the country's nuke strategy, traditionally focused on Pakistan, now appears to place increased emphasis on China, says a 2022 report of the Federation of American Scientists. 63 lakh cases pending in lower courts due to ‘lack of counsel’, says National Judicial Data Grid
