India is under enormous pressure from both Washington and Moscow to vote with them on a UN Security Council resolution to censure Russia for its invasion of Ukraine. Both sides have reached out to New Delhi to make their case and openly expressed hope that they will have India's support for a vote that is expected in the early hours of Saturday IST.
The first batch of Indian nationals from Ukraine reached Romania on Friday afternoon after crossing the Suceava border post, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said. Officials said more Indians in small groups are expected to reach Romania through the border crossing.
India will have to grapple with the renewed threat of US sanctions for weapon purchases from Russia as well as a more belligerent China along its northern borders as a fallout of the Ukraine crisis. In a hard-hitting affidavit criticising the SC’s impermissible forays into policy domain by obstinately insisting on implementation of its judgment that struck down the ordinance, the Centre said it was distressing that the apex court feels that “judicial independence” would be in peril if Parliament approved the government’s policy decision to reduce tenure of tribunal chairpersons and members to four years from the SC-suggested five years.

Around 60 per cent polling was recorded in 59 Assembly constituencies during the fourth of the seven-phase elections in Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday, according to the Election Commission. The poll panel's voter turnout app till 9.30pm showed 59.77 per cent voting. The app has updated the turnout trend percentage after an official announcement by the state poll panel at 5 pm. The State Election Commission releases the final voting percentage a day after the polling.
At least 20 people were injured on Monday and around 50 vehicles torched during the funeral procession of a Bajrang Dal worker who was murdered on Sunday. The police had to resort to lathicharge and fire teargas shells. Curfew was imposed in Shivamogga — about 270 km from Bengaluru. Harsha, 28, was stabbed by a group of men on Sunday night while he was on his way to have dinner at Bharathi Colony near New Thirthahalli Road here. He died during treatment.
The nation’s drug regulator has authorised vaccine-maker Biological E’s Corbevax for emergency use among children in the 12-17 age group, making a third shot available in the coronavirus inoculation drive for youngsters. The government has already placed its purchase order for 5 crore doses of Corbevax, which are likely to be available in the states by February-end.
