India records first ‘Omicron death’

Maharashtra confirmed the presence of Omicron in a 52-year-old man who recently died of heart attack in Pimpri Chinchwad, but stopped short of calling him the first casualty of the variant and attributed the death to his underlying health conditions.

ICMR-NIV isolates Omicron Covid strain

Scientists at the Pune-based Indian Council of Medical Research-National Institute of Virology (ICMR-NIV) have successfully isolated the Omicron strain of the novel coronavirus. The exercise will also find an answer to another critical question: Will the new variant outsmart existing antibodies in those who have had Covid from old strains?

Covid: 60+ won’t need doctor’s certificate for 3rd vaccine dose

People above 60 years with comorbidities will not be required to upload or provide a medical certificate to be eligibile for the “precautionary” dose of Covid vaccine. However, they must consult their doctor before taking the jab, the Centre said on Tuesday. States have been advised to set up separate vaccination centres dedicated for children between 15-18 years.

EC unlikely to put off polls; govt says step up tests, jabs

After being briefed in detail on the extent of Omicron cases in UP, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur as well as the status of vaccination in these states, the EC has now asked the health secretary to follow up on its instructions to step up the pace of vaccination and come back in a week’s time with a fresh report. The EC will then take a call on fine-tuning guidelines for Covid-safe campaigning and polling in the five states.

Centre sets up panel on Nagaland AFSPA relief

The Union home ministry has constituted a five-member committee headed by registrar general of India Vivek Joshi to examine the possibility of withdrawing the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act from Nagaland in the wake of the botched December 3 Army operation in Mon district that resulted in 14 civilian deaths. The committee will submit its report within 45 days.

Indigenously developed Covid-19 vaccine Covaxin has received approval from the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) for emergency use in children aged between 12-18 years.
