Why SAARC gave way to BIMSTEC

Saarc is a group comprising India’s immediate neighbours, but is often overshadowed by India-Pakistan tensions. Its potential as a trade group is also limited. Bimstec on the other hand brings together 1.5 billion people – 21% of the world population, and a combined GDP of over $ 2.5 trillion. An invitation to such a focussed grouping helps India assert its commitment to regional cooperation.
