Defence budget crosses Rs 3 lakh crore figure, but represents just a paltry 6.8% hike

The defence budget is pegged at Rs 3.18 lakh crore, which works out to just 1.5% of the projected GDP for 2019-2020, the lowest such figure since the 1962 war with China. While this figure has been steadily declining in percentage terms as the economy expands, strategic experts contend it should be over 2% to ensure the requisite military modernisation to tackle the "collusive threat" from Pakistan and China.
